Question: How can I prevent myself from getting nightmares?

Around late May of this year, I began to experience a series of nightmares. Some of them were pretty mild but others would shake my day tremendously. I thought they would end by now but they keep happening. The nightmares usually include people around me - my friends, family and those who I no longer keep in touch with. Why is this happening? Is it true that the likelihood of having a nightmare increases if you sleep facing the ceiling, rather than sideways?
