Can someone please provide some assistance on what the best and/or cheapest solution is to the following:
I have a late 2015 27 inch iMac (retina 5k) in my home office. By far the best thing about it is the screen. My new (work from home) job has supplied me with a Dell XPS 15 9570 (windows 10) laptop to use.
I want to be able to use my beautiful (and expensive!) 5k imac as an external display for the work laptop. I have read that sadly my iMac was the first generation to drop support for “target display mode” so simply hooking the two together is not possible (*shakes fist in Apple’s direction).
So from what I’ve read the only reasonable option is remote desktop from one machine to the other. What I can’t find info on is the best way to connect the two and the lack of common ports on each device is muddying the waters further.
iMac has Thunderbolt 2, USB 3 and an ethernet ports.
Dell has Thunderbolt 3, USB 3 and HDMI ports.
Both have Wifi connections as well.
What’s my best route here and what cables/adapters do I need?
