Making sense of a book page “Advanced Calculus” by Wrede and Spiegel

I’m skimming through the book “Advanced Calculus, Third Edition” by Wrede and Spiegel.
I can’t make sense of book page 107:

What does the symbol “epsilon” mean which I marked in red boxes?

Help would be much appreciated!

Making the cursor move in Ubuntu while my thumb rests on the trackpad

Just installed Ubuntu 13.04 on a 2012 Macbook Air (4,2), with good results. I’ve turned on all of the trackpad gestures I want via synclient, except for one: I almost always move the cursor with my index finger, while resting my thumb on the very bottom of the trackpad. This produced totally normal behaviour in OS X, but it results in no movement at all in Ubuntu.

Is enabling this just turning on one more of the synclient options, or is there something else I’m missing?

Making Synaptics Palm Detection Work Under Ubuntu 11.04

I’m currently using a MacBook Pro (5,5) with Ubuntu 11.04. Everything works great except palm detection with the Synaptics driver. If I use the “multitouch” driver, palm detection works great. In the past this is what I’ve done but the multitouch driver won’t turn off the trackpad while typing and, given the size of the trackpad, it’s tough to avoid. 😉

I’ve been playing with the various settings for a while (both through the GUI and by adding options to my Xorg setup) but nothing seems to change the behavior of the trackpad. I can see that my settings are taking effect through synclient, it just doesn’t seem to change anything.

Has anyone managed to get this working? I’m starting to think the problem is specific to Ubuntu, there are many pages on the internet that claim to have this working.

Making Tables and Placing Them in TeX

I made a table using some website

begin{table}[h]
    begin{tabular}{|c|c|c|c|c|}
        hline
            textbf{begin{tabular}[c]{@{}c@{}}Mathematical \ Termend{tabular}} & textbf{begin{tabular}[c]{@{}c@{}}English \ Expressionend{tabular}} & textbf{begin{tabular}[c]{@{}c@{}}Symbolic \ Termend{tabular}} & multicolumn{2}{r|}{textbf{begin{tabular}[c]{@{}r@{}}Truth \ \ Tableend{tabular}}} \ hline
            &                                                                           &                                                                      & textbf{p}                                 & textbf{p'}                                \ cline{4-5}
            Negation                                                                 & Not P                                                                     & p'                                                                   & T                                          & F                                          \ cline{4-5}
            &                                                                           &                                                                      & F                                          & T                                          \ hline
    end{tabular}
end{table}

When I placed it under my begin{enumerate} I faced this issue

enter image description here

I don’t know how to:

1) Make the table have some padding so that the borders don’t look like its squishing the table

2) Move the table to under/center it relative to 1)

Hoping someone can show me how to do these. Thanks in advance for the help.

Making TikZ nodes hyperlinkable

I have a TikZ tree. Now I want to make the nodes click-able directing to relevant sections in the document (or directed to URLs). Some of the content in the nodes are not text. Is it possible to turn the nodes into links, and if so, how? I would prefer the nodes themselves to be links, and not the text they contain.

Addition: I am not really good at it, and still learning, but here is a skeletal outline of the idea I am working on… (a graphical table of contents)

documentclass{minimal}
usepackage{tikz}
begin{document}

begin{tikzpicture}
tikzstyle{level 1}=[sibling distance=60mm]
tikzstyle{level 2}=[sibling distance=25mm]

node[circle,draw,grow=down] {textbf{COOL TOC}}
    child {node {installation}
        child {node {Linux}}
        child {node {Mac}}
        child {node {Windows}}
    }
    child {node {Get Started}
        child {node {do A}}
        child {node {do B}}
    }
    child {node {Looking Further}
        child {node {manual}}
        child {node {online}}
    }
    child[grow=up] {node {troubleshoot}
        child {node {if X happens}}
        child {node {if Y happens}}
    };
end{tikzpicture}

end{document}

enter image description here

There are fancier examples for example this one would make for a great TOC.

What’s the point of making variables private or protected in Java? [duplicate]

This question already has an answer here:

  • Why shouldn’t I be using public variables in my Java class? [duplicate]

    2 answers

Is there really any actual use for private variables and specific moments where they would be your only possible option? Or can you just set all of your variables as public without any actual changes to the program? It seems like a pointless practice that doesn’t really change much, from my perspective, so I’m wondering if I’m overlooking something.

Is making money by buying and selling foreign currency legal?

Can a person buy a foreign currency using the currency of their own country, and then sell it when their currency’s value goes down?

Say, I exchanged 44,820 INR for 1,000 USD in 2010, when 44.82 INR = 1 USD. Now that the value of the INR has fallen, I can exchange this 1,000 USD for 72,300 INR. Essentially I have made of profit of 27,480 INR in 8 years doing nothing.

Is this method legal? Are there people who use this method to make money?

Making a simple document/text running off page

the title pretty much says it all. I am a returning LaTeX user so I have forgotten some of the basics. I figured the best way to warm up would be to write a simple document but my text keeps running off the page. Here is my code:

documentclass{article}

title{Title}
author{Me}

begin{document}

maketitle

section{School stuff}
blahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahblah

end{document}

The strange thing is I looked at some of my old documents and none of them had this problem… Please help!!

Making google recaptcha work without upgrading to the most recent browsers

Right now I have firefox 43.0 for linux and to upgrade to anything beyond firefox 45 will require nearly a total system overhaul which I’m not about to do because I still like my old computer with the real keyboard.

So anyways in firefox 43, I tried the test recaptcha site here:

https://patrickhlauke.github.io/recaptcha/

and when I tried clicking on the box where the checkmark goes, nothing happens for a long time then after about 5 minutes, I get a message stating that I’m using an unsupported browser. This was Firefox 43.

I also ran the same test in Opera 11.64 and when I click the box, the blue loading circle was appearing constantly but nothing else happened.

Is there anything I can do to get the captcha to work again without going through a system overhaul and being forced to use new technology? (example: could I adjust a simple browser setting)?
