Would Gandalf have been promoted to the White if he had not fought the Balrog?

Gandalf was promoted to a White wizard after his body was destroyed in the battle with the Balrog.

This was done mainly to replace Saruman as he had joined Sauron (or at least swayed significantly from his path as protector of Middle Earth) so it had already become a necessity to find a replacement by this time.

It is shown (in the movie at least, I am not sure about the book) that it was chance that they even met the Balrog, who just happened to be there, and it might even have been possible for them to out run it.

So if they had been able to outrun it, or had not stuck around long enough to meet him there in the first place, so that Gandalf did not have to get his body destroyed by fighting him, would he still have been promoted to the Head of the White Council?

Promoted links smaller images

I’ve found css code that makes my promoted link tiles smaller. But the images inside aren’t always resized. Some images are resized and some aren’t i don’t get why.

This is how it looks:
enter image description here

This is the code i’ve found. It wraps all the tiles and make them smaller. (110px)

Edit: It isn’t important for the ‘publish to Office’ and ‘Learn to use the developer site’ tiles. Apparently they are on a sprite sheet and i won’t use spritesheets in my final code but individual images. So i’m wondering why the only image ‘Test my pics’ is cropped strangely. In code it appears it’s height is 150px and width is 100. When all the others are 100x100px.

EDIT2: God dammit i’m stupid, i just added in my css to fix this

#promotedlinkID img{
right: 0px;
width: 100px;
height: 100px;
}

Why is the notion of neutrinos as possiblly Majorana fermions still promoted given the observation of neutrino oscillations?

A Majorana particle is a fermion whose antiparticle is itself. In other words, a Majorana fermion has only two components, rather than 4 components for a Dirac fermion. Neutrinos are alleged as possibly Majorana fermions in most text books.

However with the observation of neutrino oscillations, it’s known that neutrinos do possess masses, either Dirac or Majorana masses. Both cases indicate the existence of right-handed (RH) neutrinos since:

  • Dirac mass couples LH neutrinos with RH neutrinos.
  • Majorana mass is only allowed for sterile fermions, such as RH neutrinos. Whereas LH neutrinos participate in weak interactions, thus could not carry Majorana mass. In the case of Majorana neutrino, the antiparticles of LH neutrinos are still involved in weak interactions, even though they are purported as RH.

With that, why is the notion of neutrinos as possiblly Majorana fermions still promoted?

Promoted Links tiles not rendering in IE

I am having an issue where I have added the Promoted Links app into my page (stock standard SharePoint 2013 – using seattle) and it renders perfectly in Chrome and FireFox, but in IE it doesn’t even render the HTML inside the iframe. I have tried changing looks and master pages with no luck.

I have tried changing the header content type to all the versions Edge, IE10 etc and nothing has fixed it so far.

Can any one please provide me with some direction on how to fix this? It is the first time I have had this on a site

  • SharePoint 2013 Enterprise
  • Team Site with Publishing features turned on
  • Seattle Look and feel (standard)

Formally promoted staff members, technically the same as before – is this a good idea?

I’ve been part of a gaming community since its very beginning, and I’ve seen many decisions in these years. The most recent decision is quite confusing to me because it seems irrational to me.

Before the decision, the staff members were subdivided in supporters, moderators, and administrators. The sequence is obvious: supporters have the least technical power whereas administrators have the most. Moderators are in between. In the last years, the admins were mostly absence due to stress and other stuff and mainly managed the technical site of the community: keep the servers and the forum running, take care of urgent technical matters, etc. In game, however, moderators took the lead and took care of most matters: problems between users, small technical problems, organizing small events, etc.

You can say that moderators were the people where your problem went to first, and if it couldn’t be solved, it would be redirected to the admins (which basically happened in one of ten requests). The most recent discussion changed the system crucially: the rank moderator has been removed and all moderators have been promoted to administrators.

It actually seems like a good decision because the now promoted moderators are in game and help out even more so the workload on the “real” administrators become less. However, after some time, users suspected that the promoted moderators have been just promoted on a formal level, not on a technical level since some technical request just couldn’t be solved by the promoted ones.

Today, the staff announced that it is true. The promoted moderators have the same technical level as before, just their formal level has been increased. Their argument for their decision is that most new users request an admin for basically every inconvenience and just skip the moderators. On the other side, the project is relatively large (8000 monthly active users, 7000 are regular users, project is steadily growing) and it takes some time that the information is spread.

Right now, the users of the project are confused, some even demand to return to the old system. They complain that it’s not clear anymore who can do what, and they don’t know anymore who is best suited for their problem. I understand the complaint of these users. Who do you turn to if everyone is basically the same, but actually is not?

(Currently, there are 28 team members: 15 are supporters, 13 are admins, and 2 of them are the “real” ones.)

I’m quite confused. Is it a good idea to make it look like everyone can handle your problem, although there are technical differences between the staff members who seem to be the same?

Question: Why did the kid at my work get promoted, and not me?

I work in food, at a place called dickeys bbq pit. I have been there the longest, for 3 years, I am 24. We got new owners who are 26, and they instantly liked the 17 year old. The guy owner, would even hang out with the 17 yr old after work, I guess they are pretty good friends. They just promoted him to ‘night manager’ but he gets to wear a nice manager shirt while I am still stuck wearing the old ugly shirts we got over a year ago . I am just confused why they would make the kid a manager. Hes not a very great worker. He messes around alot at work, talking to customers and secretly tries to text on his phone. He acts like a know it all, cause hes a conceited kid. I think The owners think he is so much smarter. Should I let this bother me
