## Looking for an O.Henry story where a young man from the country working in the city marries a socialite and then goes for a visit to his home

The young man in the question takes his bride to his home in the countryside to meet his family. The author describes the following scene in exquisite detail:-

1. It’s night and the entire family is sitting on the porch of their house
2. the brother of the protagonist challenges him to a wrestling match in the dirt, claiming that the protagonist has changed at heart, is an urbanite now and won’t dirty himself
3. the protagonist hesitates, but then agrees to the challenge and after some struggle wins
4. the new bride is very quiet and reticent during all of this, and the protagonist starts wondering if any of this is not to her taste, or if she dislikes this new side of him that she has discovered
5. Finally, when they go up to their room and the young man apologizes to his wife, it turns out that she wasn’t really angry/sad at all, but loved him all the more for this side of him.

## Are DOD Young Investigator Research Program (YIP) grants transferable to new universities? [on hold]

Backstory: a colleague has a YIP with the AF, funded, and has been hired by a new university. The Program Officer is on personal leave (3 months now, no end in sight). He is pushing harder, and hearing non-options like ‘don’t go to the new post’ and ‘reapply’. Has anyone seen a DOD YIP move successfully? If so, how?

## The 7 Young Men

There was 7 young men. All excellent basketball players. They each started to 1vs1 another player on their team.

They all played and nobody was left out. Everyone was present and none left the practice. Why was player#7 not left out? Who did he play with?

## What does psychology say about young children naturally doing exercices?

I have heard that young children naturally exercise. May it be speaking a language, singing, walking or physical exercise.
It has been said that when we get older these exercices have to be time managed, ie. not happening naturally. Children often just do them it is said. Sometimes with an adult but without planning anything, time management.

## Irreducible decomposition of Lorentz tensors with Young tableaux

I want to understand the irreducible decomposition of Lorentz tensors by using Young tableaux. Let me start with a trivial example. Suppose we work in $$n=4$$ dimensions, and that we have a rank 2 homogeneous tensor $$T_{ab}$$. Doing the Young tableau, we find that $$4otimes 4=10oplus 6$$, where the tensor splits into a symmetric and an antisymmetric part with subspace dimensions 10 and 6, respectively. If the antisymmetric part is real, then it is irreducible. Assume that the tensor is not traceless. The symmetric part can be further reduced to a symmetric traceless part and the trace. How is this further reduction visible when using Young operators? Shouldn’t the Young tableau directly give the irreducible parts of this tensor, i.e. $$4otimes 4=1oplus 6oplus 9$$? I know this is probably not the case, because doing Young tableaux we only consider (anti-)symmetrisations. I ask then, what is the logic behind this further reduction of the symmetric part?

Furthermore, increasing the rank, there exists for example the usual irreducible decomposition of the torsion tensor into an axial, a vectorial and a traceless tensorial part. I do not see how this split can be obtained with Young diagrams. Again, while the physical motivation may be clear, I cannot find a general mathematical prescription for this type of decomposition, nor have I found a formula for tensors of arbitrary rank. I would definitely appreciate some good references, since I have some gaps to fill in this topic.

## Is a firmware update required to read APFS volumes in Startup Manager in not so young Macs?

Last week I plugged an SSD with a bootable APFS volume with macOS into the USB port of a Macbook Pro 2010. It wasn’t seen in startup manager, as I had suspected. This macbook had never been used as it had been stored in an exposition, so its firmware had never been updated. It had its original and never used macOS 10.6 Snow Leopard installed.

Please correct me if this assumption is not correct:

Any mac whose firmware was never updated after APFS was first launched by Apple won’t see APFS volumes in startup manager because the logic board firmware wouldn’t be able to read APFS. If any mac with installed macOS releases such as Yosemite, El Cap, Sierra can see a bootable APFS volume in startup manager, it’s because it’s firmware has been updated to be able to read and write APFS. Is this correct???
The 2010 macbook mentioned above admits macOS up to the latest release (now High Sierra).

Any clarification much welcome.
